National Central University (NCU) aims to be the “world’s leading university with profound humanistic concerns.” NCU’s missions focus on six major aspects: emphasizing both professional skills and liberal arts education, cultivating leadership talent, leading knowledge innovation, pursuing academic excellence, developing social sustainability, and enhancing the welfare of humankind. On the current basis, NCU keeps improving instructional efficacy and enriching the academic and research resources. In terms of student recruitment, NCU’s two prime objectives are “talent selection by students’ aptitude” and “student diversity.”
To achieve the goal of “talent selection by students’ aptitude,” NCU not only reviews students’ general scholastic ability but also pays more attention to the “non-subject” core literacy and competence such as interdisciplinary integration, innovation and flexibility, systematic thinking and problem-solving abilities, communication and expression, teamwork, civic consciousness and international understanding, self-improvement, and lifelong learning. When reviewing all prospective applicants, NCU highly values these elements. NCU breaks conventions of subject test results as the sole factor but catches up with the trend of global demands for talent. Moreover, NCU recruits students whose aptitudes, potential, and personal traits highly match our educational goals and the features of our university, colleges, and individual departments/institutes. NCU also provides relevant academic and research resources for students, anticipating that they may enjoy self-exploration and have developmentally appropriate learning.
In addition, to create a diverse campus and to enrich students’ on-campus learning and life experiences, NCU has quite a few admission channels. Concerning undergraduate admissions, there are the Stars Program, Personal Application, and Admission by Examination and Placement. NCU also organizes Special Talents Program, Technological and Vocational Education (TVE) Joint College Entrance Examination Admission, and Elite Athletes Admission. Regarding graduate student admission, besides the full-time master’s and doctoral programs, NCU offers alternative types of programs such as in-service master’s programs, industrial development graduate programs in collaboration with enterprises, and the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) in collaboration with Academia Sinica. In addition, NCU also has admission channels for underprivileged or culturally deprived students and international students. With the multiple admission channels, we expect to recruit students with different talents, interests, cultural backgrounds, and educational backgrounds. With such a diverse campus, students may broaden their views, increase their understanding of and care about others, and inspire their peers with innovative ideas in their learning and research.
